Credit Card Fraud
" Last weekend I was a victim of a Credit Card Fraud. Luckily for me I had activated the option of receiving Email notifications each time the credit limit on my crossed a certain value or percentage (e.g.: 25%, 50%, etc)
On Monday (June 23rd) I saw one such notification saying that the transactions on my card had crossed the credit limit. Since I had not swiped my card for any such high value transactions, I checked with my bank and found that my card was used to make some 10-12 online transactions by some unscrupulous persons to the tune of 1.2 Lakh!
I found from my bank that someone had used my card during the weekend (Sat June 21st and Sun Jun 22nd) to buy Air Line Tickets, when the card was very much with me during the weekend. Myself and my husband and some friends immediately swung into action and contacted each of the 5 respective Air Lines to find out that all the flights had been taken in the weekend and some 30-40 people had happily traveled all over India(Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Indore etc) on my credit card. Luckily for us, one flight from Kolkata was arriving to Bangalore on Monday (June 23rd).
I went to one police station Police, to lodge an FIR but they directed us to Airport Police.(FIR has to be launched from the location where the crime has been committed, since this is online, they were not sure. we also did not have too much time, since the flight was landing on the same day itself.). We requested the Airlines to allow the passengers to travel to Bangalore and drove down to the Devanahalli Airport . Along with the Airport Police we were able to nab 4 people
(1 guy managed to escape) who traveled with my credit card. Then we brought them to the city police station at 10 in the night and they were questioned(I guess you all know how). After 1.5 days tension, explanations, requests, influences, blames and threats we were able to finally lodge an FIR. This has been submitted to the bank for further investigation for 45 days. Hopefully, I do not have to pay the 1.2 lakh( I just hope).
On questioning, the arrested guys said that they had no clue about any credit card and had paid an agent to arrange for tickets and deliver them home. 1 guy spilt the beans about a local agent in Bangalore who used the Credit Card details to buy these tickets online. Still the case is under investigation as it is looks like a huge chain.
But the question is How Did This Agent Get The Card Details when I haven't transacted ever with this agent???
Online Air ticket booking does not need any verification, like other transactions. We just need to give the card number, CVV number and Expiry date of the card.
I recalled having used the card in the previous week for Shopping at two malls and at a Restaurant. We give out our card to the waiter/cashier and all he has to do is to memorize your 3 digit CVV number... At one such place when I gave my card to be swiped, the CVV # (which is a last 3 digit # found on the back of the card) was noted down/memorized by the cashier / waiter/God knows who. The card # and expiry date of the card anyways shows up on the transaction slip.
I heard from some people that the CVV #, Expiry Date and Card # is sold to Credit Card Fraudsters for as low as Rs. 100/- to 200/-!! (Can you believe it!!!!)
Some Steps to Protect Yourself from Credit Card Fraud
1) Check your Credit Card Statements regularly
2) Check with your bank if you have an option to receive email / SMS notifications for High Value Transactions. If available, activate the same. Look at the back of your card and see if the CVV # is mentioned. If yes, note it elsewhere and Score it off with a permanent marker from your card
3) Sign your cards as soon as they arrive.
4) Carry your cards separately from your wallet, in a zippered compartment, a business card holder, or another small pouch.
5) Keep a record of your account numbers, their expiration dates and the phone number and address of each company in a secure place.
6) Keep an eye on your card during the transaction, and get it back as quickly as possible. In restaurants, we send the card in the folder with the waiter. And finally when you are thinking of how to save for the flight tickets for your next vacation with the family, someone else is happily flying places on your card. And then finally you end up paying for someone else’s vacation, and cancel yours.
7) DON'T sign a blank receipt. When you sign a receipt, draw a line through any blank spaces above the total.
Although credit card fraud is certainly on the rise -- and credit card fraud on the Internet is rising even more dramatically -- many savvy Internet shoppers know that the reality is that it's actually much safer to enter your credit card number on a secure online order form than it is to give your credit card to a waiter at a restaurant.
After all, what's to stop the waiter from writing down your credit card number and then selling the details for a mere 200/-.
If you think that this happens to others, it’s NOT true. YOU May be the next victim!
Hence, removing the CVV number from your card is much better than going through this mess, risks and tensions. I hope you learn from my experience rather than wait to experience it yourself. The pain of feeling cheated and then the risks and tension involved is really horrible.

How to prevent your PEN drive from VIRUS
You can protect your PC by just following the simple steps below . It won't take much time.
Connect your Pen Drive or USB drive to your computer .
Now a dialogue window will popup asking you to choose among the options. Don't choose any of them , Just simply click Cancel.
*Now go to Start--> Run and type cmd to open the Command Prompt window ..
*Now go to My Computer and Check the Drive letter of your USB drive or Pen Drive. ( E.g. If it is written Kingston (I:) , then I: will be the drive letter ..)
*In the Command Window ( cmd ) , type the drive letter: and Hit Enter ..
*Now type dir/w/o/a/p and Hit Enter
*You will get a list of files . In the list , search if anyone of the following do exist
1. Autorun.inf
2. New Folder.exe
3. Bha.vbs
4. Iexplore.vbs
5. Info.exe
6. New_Folder.exe
7. Ravmon.exe
8. RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe Extension .
If you find any one of the files above , Run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* and Hit Enter.

That's it . Now just scan your USB drive with the anti virus you have to ensure that you made your Pen Drive free of Virus .
This virus is very very common now...
To know whether ur system is infected just type C:\heap41a in the address bar...
if there is a folder named heap41a, then ur system is infected...
(AVAST antivirus is the best solution for this worm...) symantec also works.
Extract pics from DVD video
AVCutty is smart and can automatically detect the scene changes in video files. Open the extracted photographs in an software like Picasa and select the ones that you like to print.
And yes, all the software mentioned above are absolutely free. The quality of extracted images may not match that of original pictures but they would still be good enough.

Insight of Men psychology w.r.t Gals...
My target readers
- If you are a guy, age >=22 and still single....welcome to the club. Read this very seriously.
- If you are a guy, not single then reading this is not worth your time.
- If you are a girl there is nothing new here, I know most of you are omniscient.
On a random day, at a random place you come across a random girl and you get an instant feeling that she is the "one" for you. In the next few mins of talk, the inevitable question comes up "Are you on Orkut?"...Now that's the beginning. You take her email ID, flick her chat ID from Orkut and start loading her inbox with messages, forwards, funny mails, quotes etc etc., . You are always online for her and the moment you comes online the question pops up on her window, "Hey hi, wass up?" You always go to places where there is a chance of seeing her. You try to run in to her and pretend that it was accidental. You wear nice dresses and try to look good on the days when there is a high probability of meeting her. After that you take her phone number and start calling her every day. For the first few days she picks up the phone, then slowly she starts giving the busy tone and the next stage is total avoidance. But, you always believe that she is interested in you or at least you don't want to accept the truth. For some of you the big day comes when you express your feelings to her and you don't even have to wait for her reply, it is generally, "I did not see you in that way, can we be just friends?". Some don't even reach that stage, they hide their feelings, but in either case one thing is common, the girl's name ends up being the password for the next few months.
As soon as they realize that they have reached the "age", guys start trying to impress girls. Some try to show-off that they are smart and some have this weird belief that girls consider stupid guys as cute. Intelligence to innocence, being introvert to extrovert, being classy to messy, strong to weak ...anything and everything, every guy has own strategy. I don't know who came up with this quote "Everything is fair in love and war", he (not she) must probably have been one of them. I don't know why guys fail to understand that girls are smart enough to understand all these and why would not they? Even before they realize that they are "girls", guys start hitting on them, one after the other, day and night, not allowing them even to breathe properly.
After reading till here some of you might be in dilemma whether you are really desperate or not. It's very easy to come to a conclusion. Take a paper and answer the following questions in Yes or No
1. Whenever you see a girl walking on the road ahead of you, Do you increase your walking speed, walk past her and then turn back to see her face?
2. Do you become very conscious about what you are talking, when you are around with girls?
3. Do you try to be cool or someone else in order to impress girls?
4. Do you think staying clam or moody when in a group makes the girl think about you?
5. You ask a girl to join you for lunch or coffee; do you think a YES from other side is an indication that she is interested in you?
6. Do you keep staring at girls?
7. Are you ready to date a girl even if she is around with someone else as well?
8. Is "Girls" the main topic of all your discussions with your friends?
If you find even a single "YES" in the paper then YOU ARE DESPERATE. Be a man, accept it.
Now the real question "What not to do when you are desperate about having a girl friend?"
Did you actually believe that I would come up with some solution or tips? Had I known it, would I be still single? It was just a trick to make you guys read this one. But, I have one tip though, first and foremost STOP being desperate. I know that it is difficult. At least try not to show that you are desperate. The rule is simple, "No one in this world cares for a thing that is easily gettable" and FYI girls are never worried about finding a guy and why do they have to? Did you ever come across a girl who never had a BF or never been proposed by a guy? If yes, then that's a miracle, you met a rare species or an extinct one in this world.
If you got the tip that you wanted and don't want to read any further it's fine. But, I would recommend reading further. Trust me, keep reading.
We know that we are the ones who make the girls realize that they are important, treat them as if they are precious, tell them that they are beautiful and show that they are in demand. We buy them gifts, spend all the money we have, do their work, roam around with them all the time, carry their stuff and in the end what do we get in return? a few thanks and an offer to be a good friend. Do we need all this? If 1/1000 th of the time wasted on a girl is spent on a guy you will find a friend for a lifetime. Just play some game together or watch a movie, give him a cigarette or buy him a drink and that is it. Realize that spending a night with your friends drinking till everyone pukes, having a hangover throughout the next day is more fun than spending the same night with your girl in a pub buying her drinks, talking crap, listening crap, making some crap moves..... What ever.
I know that at some point of time in your life you might have realized all this. But, there is a need to educate the rest and also pass on the message to the future generations. I dream of a day when guys are in demand and girls start worrying about finding a guy. I hope the day comes soon.
If you are still desperate, you need a second read.
P.S.: To the girls: If you think that some guy is crazy about you and trying hard to impress you, please tell him immediately if you are not interested.

Simple web printing that avoids paper waste
Web printing the smart way
HP Smart Web Printing is a free, downloadable browser plug-in that makes it possible to save both time and money by printing only the sections of a website you are interested in. Once you install the program, a selection button appears on your browser’s toolbar. Using the HP Smart Selection tool, text and images can be added to a clip book, the contents of which can then be printed once all of the required information has been collected.
Using this method, it is easy to collate information from a variety of web pages into a single useful document, without the need for endless copying and pasting. Information that has been added to the clip book can be edited and re-arranged before printing, or even saved in PDF format for easy sharing. Additional text can be added to clip book documents, images can be resized and components moved around as required.
Environmental and economical
By printing only the information that is required, the amount of paper and ink that is used can be dramatically reduced, which is not only good for the environment, but also for budgets.
HP Smart Web Printing will change the way you look at websites, addressing a problem you didn't realise you had. The intuitive way of working with information soon becomes second nature, and before long you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
7 clever ways to stop office waste
1. Dial, don’t drive
Do you really need to conduct all your meetings face-to-face? Tele- and video conferencing is quick, simple and inexpensive to set-up. Many notebooks and desktops now come with conferencing capabilities so that you can lock eyes with your clients without leaving your office. Save money on air and train tickets and rapidly-rising petrol.
2. Maximise your mobility
Another great way to cut waste is with wireless mobility devices, Notebooks and connect you to your office so that you don’t use time and fuel making trips back and forth. Figures from the UK show that if small businesses reduced employee travel by just two working days a year they would collectively save more than one million tonnes of CO2, and dramatically slash their petrol costs.
3. Tonight, turn off your computer
Leaving your PC on overnight wastes more energy than you think. A shocking 75 percent of electricity is used by hardware that is supposedly turned off, according to recent research. It’s a common misconception that hardware uses no power when not switched on. Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are off – and that little bit really adds up. Unplugging things at the wall when you’re not using them is a great way to save power. Schedule your back-ups for your lunchtime so that you can switch off and unplug when you finish each day.
4. Work from home, one day a week
Studies have revealed that if UK employees worked from a home office once during the week they would save 516 million kilos of CO2 in reduced travel. They would also have lower travel costs, higher productivity and less stress by avoiding the peak-hour commuter rush. When employees must commute, encourage car-pooling.
5. Paper is precious
UK environmental group Waste Watch say white paper makes up 20 percent of the rubbish from offices and commercial sites. To reduce your paper trail use recycled products, only print when you really must, try to print on both sides, and use quality printing solutions like. They will help you enjoy improved printing productivity and not suffer from smudges, streaks or splatters.
6. Reduce by recycling
Recycling old hardware is easy with the HP’s Planet Partner service, while recycling your Original HP Print Cartridges is also quick and simple.
7. Spread the anti-waste word
Without proper communication your bright anti-wastage ideas will become just a waste of time. Make sure all your employees and colleagues are aware of and understand your initiatives.
10 e-mail mistakes that could cost your job
2. Sarcasm and dry wit Email is not a good medium to convey the intricacies of sarcasm, and often it can be taken out of context - with disastrous repercussions.
3. Private matters Always better to separate business and pleasure – and using company resources for personal issues is generally a bad idea.
4. Professional criticisms If it’s a small thing, say it over the phone; otherwise it looks too official and can cause unnecessary worry. If it’s really bad, discuss it in person.
5. Personal remarks and gossip It’s very easy to treat email like water cooler conversation, but these emails always have a tendency to get ‘Forwarded’.
6. Angry responses It’s easy to fire off an angry response without thinking, but not always easy to retract it. Best to put a delay on your email if possible, or wait a day before you respond if you’re really that upset.
7. Bad language Most people just don’t do it, but for the few who do – terrible idea, swearing has no place in work emails.
8. Company or industry secrets This one may well get you sued as well as sacked.
9. Racist/sexist language It’s best to avoid this in your everyday speech, as well as your work emails.
10. Sloppy writing Even if it’s sent from your iPAQ while you’re at the beach, remember that your image is on the line.
Last but not least, if you work in government or other offices of interest to the general public, be extra cautious. A leaked e-mail from Tony Blair’s former press officer, Jo Moore, got her in huge trouble when, on 11th September 2001, she said of the terrorist attack news “it’s now a very good day to get out anything we want to bury. Councillors’ expenses?”.

Downloading Audio
The simple way
The most straightforward way of serving audio in an html page is to directly link to the audio file. mp3 files are usually put up this way. When you pass your mouse over the link, if you see a URL that ends in .mp3 or .rm, it's a direct link. When you click on links like this, the browser usually offers to save the file to disk. Unless a plugin for that file type is installed in your browser. In that case, you can just right-click the mouse and select save target as. Some smart-ass html authors use this lame trick of disabling the right click. They just use javascript to pop up a dialog box on a mouse right click. Don't worry. You have the html with you. Go to View -> Source and locate the link to the audio file, copy it and paste it in the Location: bar. If you are on a framed page, make sure you select Frame Source. The braindead Internet Explorer sometimes grays out the View Source menu item. Try Save As to save the whole file to disk and extract the URL. If even that is deselected, use wget to download it.Meta files
This is the most common way of serving real media files. If you see a ram extension on a link, it's the realaudio metafile. It's a text file with a list of actual audio URLs. You can save this file to your disk and open it in your favorite browser to see the contents. Now what you want to do is download the URLs in that file. This is the best method to download any given URL. But there is a longer route if you prefer. The idea is to create a new html page with links to the actual URLs you want.tags and use your mouse to save those audio files away. Oh, mp3 files are also served in metafiles. These are urls ending in .m3u or .pls.
Things are not always this simple. Getting to the .ram link may itself be quite involved. Web page authors use all kinds of tricks to hide this link from your eyes. But rest assured. If the browser can see it, so can you. First, try to save the page (either from the browser or through wget) and look at the contents. Sometimes, urls are generated through javascript, so you may have to really interpret the code to get the final url. If this is too complicated, you have the catchall trick: use a sniffer.
Using a sniffer
Using a packet sniffer, you can look at all the packets going to and from your machine. In this case, we are interested in http packets. Ethereal is what I use. Fire it up, and look for http packets. They have the url that ultimately goes to the web server. Just copy it and use wget.I recently came to know of another sniffer called URLSnooper. This tool captures just the URLs going on the wire; so you don't have to wade through the html files to get at them. In conjunction with Streambox VCR, this can be a deadly tool. Look at the end of this page for the link.
Some web servers are a little smarter than usual. They let you listen to an rm file only through the Realplayer. They do this with the User-agent field in the http header. The browser usually identifies itself in this field. To defeat this, you just tell wget to mimic Realplayer:
wget --user-agent='RMA/1.0 (comptabile; RealMedia)'You can use the sniffer to see what headers the browser or the player is using.
Using wget to download files
wget is a command line browser, so to speak. You give it a url and it saves it to your disk. It's of immense help in our context. You can save the .ram file from the browser and use wget to get the urls contained in it. You can even use the-i option to get it directly: wget -i song1.ramwget is your friend. It's available for all platforms.
pnm and rtsp
All the above tricks assume the audio files are sent through http: links. Quite a few web servers use a Realaudio server to serve audio. As you can expect, only Realplayer can talk to this server. The audio files are linked thru the ram links. The ram file here contains links like:pnm://some.server.net/song1.rmor
rtsp://some.server.net/song2.rmThe protocol here is proprietary. In the case of the latter, even though RTSP is an open protocol, the data passed in the RTSP packets is specific to the Realaudio server and the player. We all know that proprietary protocols are bad. There are some good people on the net that hacked this protocol and built a program that can download these URLs to disk as well. Look for Streambox VCR Underground on the net. This software is illegal. You are warned. Search the net and you'll find all the legal history.
That, pretty much covers all the ways (I think) of downloading stuff. Let me know if you find a page that beats all this. I'll be very interested.
Realaudio to mp3 conversion!
Is it possible to convert realaudio to mp3 or any other open format? This is probably a question that almost everybody that dealt with Real faced. Finally, I found an answer. There is a tool based on Streambox VCR that lets you do this. It's called Streambox Ripper. See below for the links. There is a more legal way of doing the conversion if you are running Linux. vSound is a tool that lets you save the output of an audio player into a wav file. I haven't tried it. Let me know if you find it useful.

Importance of Having breakfast....

Breakfast can help prevent strokes, heart attack and sudden death. Advice on not to skip breakfast!
Healthy living
For those who always skip breakfast, you should stop that habit now! You've heard many times that "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." Now, recent research confirms that one of the worst practices you can develop may be avoiding breakfast.
Why?
Because the frequency of heart attack, sudden death, and stroke peaks between 6: 00a.m. and noon, with the highest incidence being between 8: 00a.m. and 10:00a.m.What mechanism within the body could account for this significant jump in sudden death in the early morning hours?
Platelet, tiny elements in the blood that keep us from bleeding to Death if we get a cut, can clump together inside our arteries due to cholesterol or laque buildup in the artery lining. It is in the morning hours that platelets become the most activated and tend to form these internal blood clots at the greatest frequency.
However, eating even a very light breakfast prevents the morning platelet activation that is associated with heart attacks and strokes. Studies performed at Memorial University in St.Johns, Newfoundland found that eating a light, very low-fat breakfast was critical in modifying the morning platelet activation. Subjects in the study consumed either low-fat or fat-free yogurt, orange juice, fruit, and a source of protein coming from yogurt or fat-free milk. So if you skip breakfast, it's important that you change this practice immediately in light of this research. Develop a simple plan to eat cereal, such as oatmeal or Bran Flakes, along with six ounces of grape juice or orange juice, and perhaps a piece of fruit. This simple plan will keep your platelets from sticking together, keep blood clots from forming, and perhaps head off a potential Heart Attack or stroke.
So never ever skip breakfast .

Tips on filling FUEL in your vehicles
In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low,
Compiled by Ramesh Patel on 16.03.2008 @ 10:00Hrs. Page 2 of 2
middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.
Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.
ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Power of Positive Talk
I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did my dad understand that specific words affect our mental pictures, but he understood words are a powerful programming factor in lifelong success.
One particularly interesting event occurred when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and literally hanging around upside down from the rafters of our lake house. So, it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. My little eight-year-old brain didn't realize the tree could break or I could get hurt. I just thought it was fun to be up so high.
My older cousin, Tammy, was also in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big limb, about ten feet below me. Tammy's mother also noticed us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree. I could hear the leaves start to rattle and the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad's voice over the wind yell, "Bart, Hold on tightly." So I did. The next thing I know, I heard Tammy screaming at the top of her lungs, laying flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.
I scampered down the tree to safety. My dad later told me why she fell and I did not. Apparently, when Tammy's mother felt the gust of wind, she yelled out, "Tammy, don't fall!" And Tammy did. fall.
My dad then explained to me that the mind has a very difficult time processing a negative image. In fact, people who rely on internal pictures cannot see a negative at all. In order for Tammy to process the command of not falling, her nine-year-old brain had to first imagine falling, then try to tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. Whereas, my eight-year-old brain instantly had an internal image of me hanging on tightly.
This concept is especially useful when you are attempting to break a habit or set a goal. You can't visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a word for what you want to do and visualize that. For example, when I was thirteen years old, I played for my junior high school football team. I tried so hard to be good, but I just couldn't get it together at that age. I remember hearing the words run through my head as I was running out for a pass, "Don't drop it!" Naturally, I dropped the ball.
My coaches were not skilled enough to teach us proper "self-talk." They just thought some kids could catch and others couldn't. I'll never make it pro, but I'm now a pretty good Sunday afternoon football player, because all my internal dialogue is positive and encourages me to win. I wish my dad had coached me playing football instead of just climbing trees. I might have had a longer football career.
Here is a very easy demonstration to teach your kids and your friends the power of a toxic vocabulary. Ask them to hold a pen or pencil. Hand it to them. Now, follow my instructions carefully. Say to them, "Okay, try to drop the pencil." Observe what they do.
Most people release their hands and watch the pencil hit the floor. You respond, "You weren't paying attention. I said TRY to drop the pencil. Now please do it again." Most people then pick up the pencil and pretend to be in excruciating pain while their hand tries but fails to drop the pencil.
The point is made.
If you tell your brain you will "give it a try," you are actually telling your brain to fail. I have a "no try" rule in my house and with everyone I interact with. Either people will do it or they won't. Either they will be at the party or they won't. I'm brutal when people attempt to lie to me by using the word try. Do they think I don't know they are really telegraphing to the world they have no intention of doing it but they want me to give them brownie points for pretended effort? You will never hear the words "I'll try" come out of my mouth unless I'm teaching this concept in a seminar.
If you "try" and do something, your unconscious mind has permission not to succeed. If I truly can't make a decision I will tell the truth. "Sorry John. I'm not sure if I will be at your party or not. I've got an outstanding commitment. If that falls through, I will be here. Otherwise, I will not. Thanks for the invite."
People respect honesty. So remove the word "try" from your vocabulary.
My dad also told me that psychologists claim it takes seventeen positive statements to offset one negative statement. I have no idea if it is true, but the logic holds true. It might take up to seventeen compliments to offset the emotional damage of one harsh criticism.
These are concepts that are especially useful when raising children.
Ask yourself how many compliments you give yourself daily versus how many criticisms. Heck, I know you are talking to yourself all day long. We all have internal voices that give us direction.
So, are you giving yourself the 17:1 ratio or are you shortchanging yourself with toxic self-talk like, " I'm fat. Nobody will like me. I'll try this diet. I'm not good enough. I'm so stupid. I'm broke, etc. etc."
If our parents can set a lifetime of programming with one wrong statement, imagine the kind of programming you are doing on a daily basis with your own internal dialogue. Here is a list of Toxic Vocabulary words.
Notice when you or other people use them.
Ø But: Negates any words that are stated before it.
Ø Try: Presupposes failure.
Ø If: Presupposes that you may not.
Ø Might: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for your listener.
Ø Would Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen.
Ø Should Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen (and implies guilt.)
Ø Could Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen.
Ø Can't/Don't: These words force the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of what you want. This is a classic mistake that parents and coaches make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error.
Examples:
Toxic phrase: "Don't drop the ball!"
Likely result: Drops the ball
Better language: "Catch the ball!"
Toxic phrase: "You shouldn't watch so much television."
Likely result: Watches more television.
Better language: "I read too much television makes people stupid. You might find yourself turning that TV off and picking up one of those books more often!"
Exercise: Take a moment to write down all the phrases you use on a daily basis or any Toxic self-talk that you have noticed yourself using. Write these phrases down so you will begin to catch yourself as they occur and change them.

Wanna Driving License???
Getting the Learner Licence
You'll need to use a learner license for a month before getting a permanent license. There are touts outside the RTA office out to convince you that you need to go through them, but getting a learner is pretty simple. Get an application form (Form 2) from the zonal RTA.
These are the various zonal offices.
Hyderabad Zone 6 - Office of Jt Transport Commissioner & Secretary, RTA, Khairatabad
Ph: 3311269, 3128260 · Hyderabad South Zone, RTA Office, Bahadurpura, Ph: 4414635
Hyderabad East Zone - RTA Office, 16-2-748/1, B Block, Malakpet
Ph:4548999
Hyderabad West Zone - 12-2-416/76, Ushodaya Colony, Mehdipatnam, Ph: 3515222
Secunderabad - Plot No 144, Kakaguda, 7742568
Rangareddy District - 6-3-251/7/2, Panjagutta
Ph:3393051
These are the various things required:
- Proof of your date of birth
- A copy of your DoB certificate or of your SSC
- Proof of address
- Copy of ration card or bank passbook, or certificate from the municipal office
- 3 passport photographs
- Rs. 15
There's a small test of your knowledge of traffic signals, and the license is given in a day or two (sometimes even in half an hour). It's valid for 6 months, but you can apply for a permanent license after a month.
Getting a Permanent License
This is not easy if you're ethical. There was a front-page article in the Deccan Chronicle, sometime in Oct-Dec of 1999, about corruption in the RTA. They are pretty honest about the fact that they are dishonest - some really big guy there proudly proclaimed that they were corrupt, and that he could be quoted on it. And he knew that he was saying it to the city's leading newspaper.
This is amply demonstrated by the fact that as you try to enter, touts outside the RTA discourage you from trying yourself. They warn you that if you don't go through them (paying about 7 times more), you'll fail the test for some silly reason. And judging by the number of people who go through them, they're probably right too.
Anyway, to apply for a permanent license, you need to apply at least 1 month after you obtain the learning license. You need to fill the Form 4, and need the following:
- Your learner license
- 3 photographs
- A vehicle with you for the test of driving
You need to pay Rs. 30 as the fee for the test. If you want a laminated card, you'll have to pay an additional Rs. 25. The license is issued in 2 days if you pass the test, else you need to take it again after a few months. The license is valid for 20 years. That's probably the greatest part.
